BERKELEY (CBS/AP) — Police dispatch tapes show officers didn’t immediately respond to a Berkeley man’s non-emergency call about an intruder before the homeowner was bludgeoned to death with a ceramic pot.

There was never a radio call because officers were on standby for an Occupy Oakland march heading toward UC Berkeley.

There was a 911 call 15 minutes later from the wife of 67-year-old Peter Cukor saying her husband was being attacked.

Murder charges have been filed against 23-year-old Daniel Jordan DeWitt for the Feb. 18 killing.

Cukor discovered DeWitt in his garage and he called the police nonemergency line.

Officer Jerome Cobert saw Cukor’s initial report on his squad car computer 12 minutes later.

But a dispatcher waved him off, saying life-threatening emergencies were a priority.
